Jobless Hasn’t Been Updated in Forever…

…and for that I am sorry.  Everyone on the Jobless team has been working tirelessly on…things unrelated to Jobless.  That being said, we haven’t forgotten you! If you believe in the potential of Jobless, let us know! We are working on recruiting an undergrad to take the sites over and make Jobless everything that it can be.

In the meantime…I stumbled on this incredibly useful blog that everyone in the Boston area should check out: http://bostonhiringblog.com/ .  I am so very into this blog because it has useful advice from the people who hire…something all of us could use a bit more of.  Check it out, and send us some comments on information you find particularly useful from their site!

The Plan Wasn’t to Inundate You With Job Blogs But…

Sorry for the long breaks between posts…now that summer is winding down, it’s been hard to keep up with all of our obligations. I personally have been looking for internships (and some jobs) recently, and have been interviewing and traveling like crazy because of it (Bolt, Mega and the Chinatown bus ticket sellers probably know my face, if not name, by now). I have some pretty funny tales to share (and hopefully the anecdotes serve as friendly reminders for things that may be easy to forget and give tips that can be relevant to your own correspondences and meetings–feel free to add to the conversation as you please!).

But, as I am for the moment exhausted from all of the job searching, apartment finding, interning and am in a fairly comatose state from the wonderful Brazilian food from around the corner of our lovely alma mater (Oasis for the win!), I will be sharing some more links to sites that will be useful to your searches. This list is courtesy of http://www.jobprofiles.org/library/job-search/100_best_blogs_for_your_job_search.htm.  Go there for active links (or do an organic search for blogs that catch your eye).  They have some  other really interesting lists on their site as well.

Onwards!

3 Tips for Finding a Mentor & Developing a Mentoring Relationship

You’re searching through the Tufts Career Network database of alumni and you see someone with a career path that interests you. Might this person be your next mentor? Consider the following 3 things when seeking a mentor who will guide you toward your career and life goals.

Think about what you want and how to ask for it
What are you hoping to gain from a mentoring relationship? Good conversation with a respected person who shares your interests and can give you advice? Excellent answer! Rather than calling or emailing him/her to say, “Hey, will you be my mentor?” use a more casual approach. Perhaps your first conversation is a “getting to know you” exchange of information. Assuming you get along well with him/her and would like to continue your discussions, you may then ask if he/she is willing to talk with you on an ongoing basis.

Discuss mutual expectations and do your part
How often will you connect with your mentor? What is reasonable given your respective schedules? You may start out thinking that it will be easy to talk by phone or meet every few weeks, but make sure your plans aren’t overly ambitious. What will your mentor expect from you? Remember, as the “mentee,” it’s your responsibility to develop the relationship by proactively engaging your mentor, rather than waiting passively for him/her to reach out to you. Setting clear expectations in the beginning of the mentoring relationship will add to its longevity.

Don’t force it
Mentoring relationships develop organically. When you think about the people whom you would refer to as “mentors,” I’m guessing that most are family members, teachers, family friends, coaches, and others you met naturally in the course of your life – who then became mentors over time. With this in mind, remember to be patient when cultivating a relationship with a potential mentor. Not all mentoring relationships work perfectly or last forever, but that’s okay! It takes time and sometimes a few tries to develop the kind of rapport that one hopes for with a trusted mentor.

Consider chatting with Career Services for more advice on finding a mentor in your field of interest. We’d be glad to help you get started. For more on mentoring, check out these articles:

Avoid the Quarterlife Crisis

“Imagine a day in the life of a couple you probably know. He’s 27 years old, and she’s 26. They wake up beside each other in his downtown bachelor apartment and have sex that neither of them particularly enjoys. They’ve been sort-of dating for a while now, but they’re not willing to commit to each other: he likes her, but doesn’t know if he always will. She can’t decide if she likes him more or less than the other two guys she’s sleeping with.

He bikes to work at an advertising agency, where he uses his master’s in English to proofread ad copy, and spends several hours reading music blogs and watching movie trailers, periodically Twittering updates about his workday to his 74 followers. He doesn’t really hate his job, but feels as if his skin is crawling with vermin most of the time that he’s there, so he has a plan to move to Thailand, or to maybe write a book. Or go to law school.”
